17 Fit Calculators Ideal weight calculator
Ideal weight calculator the healthy range for your height and what the classic formulas say
Choose your sex and enter your height. You’ll see the weight range the World Health Organization counts as healthy for your height, and what six classic ideal-weight formulas give.
Healthy range for your height
50.4–67.8 kg
BMI 18.5–24.9, the WHO’s healthy range for adults
17 Fit never suggests a goal below a BMI of 20: for your height, that’s 54.5 kg.
What the formulas say
| Devine (1974) made for drug dosing | 56.9 kg |
|---|---|
| Robinson (1983) a refit of Devine | 57.4 kg |
| Miller (1983) a refit of Devine | 59.8 kg |
| Hamwi (1964) a rule of thumb | 56.4 kg |
| Lorentz a European rule of thumb | 57.5 kg |
| Broca height in cm − 100 | 65 kg |
Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi count up from five feet (152.4 cm), so they give no figure for a shorter height.

Where the formulas come from
Ideal-weight formulas are old rules of thumb, the newest from 1983. They know only your height and sex, not your muscle or build.
- Devine, Robinson, Miller A base weight in kilos at five feet, plus a set amount for every inch above it. Devine’s formula was made for drug dosing, not for setting goals; Robinson and Miller refitted it to later data.
- Hamwi and Broca Older rules of thumb. Hamwi also counts by the inch from five feet; Broca simply takes 100 off your height in centimetres.
- Lorentz Height − 100, less a quarter (men) or half (women) of the centimetres over 150. Above 150 cm it always gives less than Broca, and the gap grows with height.
- The WHO range A BMI of 18.5–24.9: wide enough for different builds, and the range doctors use for adults.

Questions and answers
What is my ideal weight?
There’s no single number. For adults the WHO counts a BMI of 18.5–24.9 as healthy, which at 170 cm is about 53.5–72 kg. Each formula gives a single figure inside or near that range.
Which formula is the most accurate?
No formula is accurate for an individual: they describe averages, and Devine’s was made for drug dosing. Robinson and Miller refitted it to later data; the WHO range is the safer guide.
Why do the formulas give different weights?
They come from different data and decades, and they know only your height and sex. Muscle, build and age change what’s right for you.
Is the ideal weight the same for women and men?
The WHO range is the same for both. Most formulas give women a few kilos less at the same height; Broca gives both the same.
Should I aim for a formula’s number?
Not necessarily: the formulas are rough, and the healthy range is wide. If you’re above it, losing even 5–10 % of your weight often makes a difference to your health. 17 Fit never suggests a goal below a BMI of 20.
Who is the calculator not for?
Children and teenagers, pregnant women, very muscular people and older adults: their healthy weight is judged differently. Ask a doctor what’s right for you.
